Meta’s WhatsApp said it will end support for some Android devices on January 1, 2025. Those running Android KitKat (Android 4.0) will no longer be supported by the messaging app. This means that users of outdated Android devices have to upgrade their smartphones to keep using WhatsApp.
Over the years, WhatsApp has evolved into a powerful communication application with enhanced features and security improvements. In addition to Android, WhatsApp will drop support for iPhones running iOS 15.1 or earlier starting May 5, 2025, including models iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus.
Android users will see several popular devices lose access to WhatsApp. They are:
Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E (2014)
HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
Once support is withdrawn, all data on the devices, including WhatsApp chats and all media files, will be deleted completely. Users are advised to back up their data and transfer it to another newer device before the cut-off date.
The new version is also compatible with devices running on version 6.0 or more of Android and will allow some users to have an upgrade opportunity in the coming month as it will release the Samsung Galaxy S25 series.
It is through such updates that WhatsApp is trying to focus on modern technology, AI features, and security for users to enjoy without any problems.
