Asia and the Middle East lead the world in mobile internet speeds, leaving behind developed nations such as the United States. Since 2018, more than 1.5 billion people have gained internet access; however, a stark divide in speed and data usage persists across regions. Wealthy nations boast median mobile broadband speeds five times faster and consume 20 times more data per person compared to low-income countries. The latest data from October 2024 brings about some interesting shifts in the global rankings.
Changes in Top 5 Rankings
The top five countries in terms of mobile internet speeds have experienced some changes. Denmark advanced two spots to enter the top five with a median download speed of 149.73 Mbps. Bulgaria made a great leap forward to rank among the fastest. Meanwhile, South Korea is out of the top five. However, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar are at the top, with Kuwait emerging as the new challenger. Gone was Kuwait from the top three; Kuwait now ranks third and has a median download speed of 258.51 Mbps.
Pakistan ranks 100th in mobile internet speeds with a median download speed of 20.61 Mbps. The country sits at 141st place for broadband internet with a median speed of 15.6 Mbps. However, despite these figures, Pakistan has shown slight progress by climbing two spots in the broadband rankings.
These rankings bring out the significant digital divide and the need for infrastructure investment in slower regions to bridge the gap.
