Pakistan Information Minister for Technology and Telecommunications, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, also recently briefed the National Assembly that Elon Musk’s Starlink Internet Services Pakistan (Pvt.) Ltd. and Chinese firm Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology have now applied for a license for operations in Pakistan. That comes after a condition the companies need to be first registered with the Securities & Exchange Commission of Pakistan to get permission from the PTA.
SpaceX, through Starlink company which provides internet based on satellites, and Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology which focuses its services on satellite communications, intends to widen its business presence in Pakistan. According to the minister, the framework for PTA is available only for locally registered companies. It is the duty of such international companies, if registered under the SECP, to be qualified to apply.
The licensing process is straightforward, with PTA reviewing applications after necessary formalities and, if needed, security clearance from the Ministry of Interior. To facilitate applicants, the Online Application Submission Information System (OASIS) allows companies to submit and track their applications remotely, streamlining the procedure significantly.
PTA concentrates on good quality internet through the quality of service through the Fixed Broadband QoS Regulations, 2022, where it provides regular benchmarking for an internet provider. Thus this ensures effective and efficient communication connectivity among users all around the country, thereby upholding the digital transformation needs of Pakistan.
Starlink may provide a huge revolutionary change to internet connectivity, most importantly to remote areas within Pakistan.
