The government has established a new Science and Technology company within the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST). The development has been told to the Senate Standing Committee. The officials of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoS&T) during the meeting briefed about this new corporation. The new corporation is proposed as a corporate body aimed at collaborating with international experts and scientists to further the cause of science.
Leadership and Future Plans
A serving general of the Armed Forces has been placed at the helm of the venture under the Science and Technology Division. Located at NUST, the firm will be a research and development house and will play an important role in developing Pakistan’s technological capabilities. The Secretary of Science and Technology said that the organization was registered a month ago and that the board of directors will be formed soon. Committee members emphasized the need for hastening the board’s incorporation and drafting a legislative plan to facilitate its working.
It was also during the meeting that the committee expressed concern about the delay in the digitization process of the Pakistan Standards Quality Control Authority (PSQCA). The committee expressed dissatisfaction over the incomplete payment system of fines and handed over a two-month deadline, warning of complications if there is no progress.
Other concerns included misleading advertisements for milk substitutes and the sale of unsafe food products, such as contaminated pickles. The committee emphasized the need for stricter regulation and public awareness to address these issues.
The session ended with discussions of the rightsizing committee recommendation to merge staff from the Ministry of Science with other sections. The ministry, however, proposed that technical staff within science-related disciplines should not be included in the recommendations, arguing that these staff members might be more effective in scientific endeavors.
