Google is allegedly preparing to leap back into the market with its new laptop, codenamed “Snowy.” This high-end laptop will be positioned right against top rivals like the Apple MacBook Pro, Dell XPS, Microsoft Surface, and Samsung Galaxy Chromebook. This project has officially crossed the concept stage; the company has also formed a development team for it.
Early buzz suggests the Pixel Laptop will probably run Chrome OS, although some hint that it is good enough to allow Android as well. This would fit with Google’s persistent effort to merge Android and Chrome OS into a single ecosystem. The shift would place the Pixel Laptop ahead of the competition in the market, bringing forth an innovative, cross-platform user experience that would be unique from other devices.
Google’s Push into Laptops
However, while Google has attempted to launch laptops over the years, such as the Chromebook Pixel in 2013 and the PixelBook and PixelBook Go in subsequent years, none have secured its place in the laptop market. The first version of Chromebook Pixel was premium in design and specs but was priced too high; subsequent ones showed promise but failed to hold any market share.
With “Snowy,” however, Google aims much higher. It is expected to be sleek with top-tier performance and cutting-edge features. Google’s newest effort promises quite transparently an overt assertion of a category for the high-end laptop market. Exactly what software the laptop will run remains a mystery, but one thing is fairly obvious: Google’s Pixel Laptop could well be the game-changer.
