PTA Starts De-activation of SIM Cards for Late Persons

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has started a new procedure that would deactivate SIM cards of late people. The move is to increase security in the country’s telecommunication sector by preventing misdeals and frauds being carried out through such SIM cards, which might be used for any kind of identity theft or illegal transaction, threatening public safety and national security.

Procedure Apparently

It will be a joint effort between PTA, the telecom companies, and the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). Here is a general outline of how the process would go:

Data Verification: NADRA will provide PTA with updated information on deceased persons, including certificates of death.

SIM Identification: PTA will identify currently active SIMs registered under such persons.

Notification: Families will be notified beforehand. SIMs would not be deactivated during this period. There will be enough time given to individuals to act or change their numbers.

De-activation: If the family takes no action, telecom operators deactivate the SIMs after a specified time.

This would ensure that families will have the option to transfer numbers while PTA will be able to prevent misuse effectively.

Advantages and Public View

All these advantages entail better security, protection of family privacy, and compliance with regulations. It aims to minimize fraudulent activities, unauthorized financial dealings, and criminal use of such SIM cards. The initiative also keeps an updated telecom user database in Pakistan accurate.

The measure has been welcomed by most of the public but with massive reservations by other people, most concerning the difficulties of transferring numbers to heirs. To help address these challenges, PTA has put together awareness campaigns and helpline services to help families through the process and ease this transition.

In a nutshell, these are significant steps taken by the PTA to block SIM cards of dead individuals toward a more secure and transparent telecom sector for Pakistan. PTA is addressing this gap by building public trust and safeguarding the industry from further misuse of idle SIMs.
